Fibromyalgia Syndrome/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (FMS/CFS) is better accepted as a "legitimate" condition than has been the case in the past, but its particular cause remains poorly understood. FMS/CFS is a persistent condition characterized by pain experienced at multiple tender points around the body, often at the insertion points of the muscles into the joints (FMS) and debilitating levels of fatigue that does not resolve with sleep and that can be exacerbated by exercise (CFS). Finding the best way to remain functionally active is often challenging. Ultimately, FMS/CFS appears to be an illness "destination" that can be reached by following many different paths. Sometimes, particular traumas or stressors (e.g., an injury or surgery, an illness, or an emotional trauma) can activate the FMS/CFS pattern. At other times, the condition develops without a a specific triggering event. At PIH, the treatment of FMS/CFS is approached from a multi-causal and cross-disciplinary perspective that reflects the unique combinations of musculoskeletal, nutritional, energetic, psychological/emotional, and medical factors that must often be resolved with any given individual in order to achieve significant symptom relief and bring the client back to a healthy and functional life. The types of therapies we use to treat FMS/CFS at PIH include:
- Stress management training, biofeedback training (David Alter, PhD, LP), (Harriet Kohen, LICSW)

- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to address emotional and physical trauma (Lois Fischer, MA, LMFT), (Deborah Simmons, PhD, LMFT)
